Erie, PA Vintage Map Mug: Where Perry Built the Fleet
A historical bird's-eye map of Erie, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1870 and printed full wrap on ceramic. Albert Ruger did this one, and he was as good as anybody ever got at this kind of work. The harbor, the streets, the whole city as it sat behind Presque Isle.
I restore these myself. The scans come in soft and stained, and I upscale them, clean them up, and pull a century of damage out until the linework prints sharp again.
Erie built the fleet that won the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. Oliver Hazard Perry had the ships cut out of the woods around the bay and put together right there on the water, then sailed them out and took the lake. This map is the city about sixty years after that, still a port town, still working.
